A very reasonable daily set lunch (2-courses $23, 3-courses $27) is offered even on weekends. Whilst the friend decided to go for it, nothing was too exciting for my palate so I chose to go ala carte instead.
To start, we had warm and toasty sundried tomato foccacia bread together with a standard olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip. I had to stop at two before I got too full!
My starter of grilled squid with arugula, chopped olives and pinenuts (S$13) was a generous serving. The olives really added a nice briney flavour to the bitter greens. The squid was fresh and not too chewy. Eating all the various ingredients together was the best way to enjoy this salad. There were different flavours and textures that just worked together.
The friend had the pear and spinach salad. You may not notice from the pictures, but there was a noticable difference in portions between the set lunch option and the ala carte.
For the main course, I satisfied my craving for creamy carbohydrates. The linguine with mixed mushrooms in cream sauce ($15) hit the spot. While the pasta was just a bit overcooked for me (I like mine with slightly more bite), I would let that slide because the cream sauce was not too heavy and the heap of mushrooms made it just too hard to be so harsh.
After those two courses though, I had absolutely no craving or room for anything else. That was a real pity because I hear only good things about Brown Sugar's desserts. Then again, I really like this place so I am quite sure it is only a matter of time before I will get to try their sweets.
