Travel: Fish Face, Sydney

One of the places that Sooks recommended was Fish Face, a small and casual seafood-only restaurant just a few minutes walk from King James station. A dinner date was quickly arranged and thankfully, we managed to maintain our reservation after some last minute twist of events.

Fish Face occupies a small shop space with tall bistro tables flanking the front of the floor and towards the back, a sushi and sashimi counter adjacent to the narrow open kitchen.

Service was excellent despite only two servers.  We were introduced to the daily specials and encouraged to have some wine while waiting.  Wines by the glasses were available and not overly marked up; I got a refreshing (150ml) glass of white wine for A$10.

The Man and I shared everything - three starters, a main and then a last minute order of spicy tuna sushi roll to fill the stomachs.  Light and delicate ingredients and seasoning really brought out the natural sweetness of the various fish.  Plus, everything was simply presented but still looked beautiful. I cannot put a finger to a favorite. They were all different and delicious.

Kingfish tartare was rough chopped and thus, had some good bite. It was served with briny capers and some sort of lemon oil dressing, which we were instructed to toss everything together. Crisp toast was served alongside and I enjoyed making my own bruschetta of sort.

Deep sea bream carpaccio was sliced not too thin so I could still get the firm and meaty texture. The ponzu and yuzu sauce paired pretty well.  This was good, but not exactly exciting.

King spanner crab salad was sweet, and enhanced further with thin juliennes of nashi pear. Fish Face added a Thai twist that included fish sauce, basil leaves and cashew nuts. I loved this and wished there was more.

Our main course was a daily special jewfish served with mashed cauliflower and vegetables.  The skin was crispy and the flesh tender.  We were also instructed to start eating from belly side up as the fish continued to cook further after being plated.  The result was a tender piece of fish from start to end.  What a feat!

Finally, we shared two desserts with Sooks and her partner.  Desserts options were relatively simple but both our options were well executed. 

The banana souffle was light and airy, top to bottom.  And the brioche french toast was comforting and good.

It was an excellent dinner and I was very happy to be able to catch up with Sooks.

How do you juggle it all :( ?

I just feel that I don't have enough time - for the husband and  much less for myself!

During the workday, I make sure I try to go home on time so I could spend a couple of hours with A, and put him to bed. Then it's time to have my last pump at about 9pm before I just want to  zone out and crash.  The boy wakes up at least 3 times ever since his last leap when he learnt how to stand. Additionally, he fell really ill for the first time (i.e. antibiotics).  Prior to that, he cries 1-2 times but easily soothed with pacifier or with some milk. Because of these frequent interrupted sleep, the man and I took turns to fall ill as well, and it is difficult to recover. I still have the head colds and occasionally coughing spells.

On weekends, our schedule revolves around family events, and then I try to plan so that A can try to get a nap or 2 as well as to plan our routes throughout the day so I would end up somewhere comfortable to pump when I needed to.  Often the nap part fails,…

OOOh, new flavour!

I have been eating Quest nutrition protein bars for years! I love the taste and they are less guilty than the real deal.  The flavours are pretty spot on and they are available at  I recently shared about this site as well.

I eat at least one of them a day to satisfy that sweet tooth. My favourites so far are the cinnamon roll and smores.  But I'm excited that a new flavour has been launched and can't wait for the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip flavour to arrive!
